THE ROLE OF INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT IN PROMOTING HUMAN RIGHTS

summary of the speech given by the guest speaker Muchochoko during the public lecture with the theme "the role of ICC in promoting human rights" at Uganda Christian University

What is the role of the ICC?

  • it has been created by Europeans to prosecute Africans
  • it has been created to complement the judicial system.
Why is ICC in Africa?
  • Africa has failed to handle their own cases
  • ICC targets African leaders/impunity. African leaders must stop climbing on dead bodies to get power. Each time there is an election in Africa, we get worried.
Why does ICC exercise jurisdiction?

it only does that in countries that have accepted to sign up to its terms and conditions

What are some of the crimes ICC investigates?

crimes against humanity for example; massive murders. one of the cases cited is the case in uganda of one Ongwen Domnic ex-commander of the Sinia Brigade of the Lord's Resistance Army, a guerrilla group that formerly operated in northern Uganda.
